Magnetic covers

A magnetic cover has a ring of magnets built into its back. That ring is what lets a MagSafe charger or a magnetic car mount snap on and hold — and it is the one feature you cannot add later, so it is worth deciding before you buy.
What the ring is for
Without a magnet, a wireless charger has to be placed correctly every time and a magnetic mount will not hold the phone at all. With one, the charger aligns itself, and the mount grips through the cover. If you use a wireless charger on a bedside table, or a phone holder in a car, this is the feature that changes how the phone is used every day.
Does it slow down charging?
No. The ring sits around the charging coil rather than over it, and a magnetic cover charges wirelessly at the same speed as a non-magnetic one. A very thick cover can reduce wireless charging speed — that is true of any cover — but the magnet itself is not the cause.
How to tell one from a normal cover
In this shop the magnetic covers are the ones whose name carries "OGMag", and the product page for each one says so. A normal cover charges wirelessly as before but has no magnet, so a magnetic mount will not hold it. If you are not sure which you have, hold a paperclip against the back: it will stick to a magnetic cover and slide off any other.
